The Definition of "Basic Detail"
"Basic detail" sounds like it should mean the same thing everywhere — but in practice, it varies wildly from shop to shop. Some operators sell a glorified car wash and call it detailing. Others bundle in interior vacuum, surface wipe-down, and exterior wax and call that the same thing.
A basic detail is a complete maintenance clean — interior and exterior — for a vehicle that's already in reasonably good condition. It is not a deep restoration. It is not paint correction. It is the level of service that keeps a well-maintained car looking new.
If your vehicle has heavy stains, embedded sand, pet hair throughout, oxidized paint, or cloudy headlights, you'll need a step above basic. We'll tell you that up front when you request a quote, rather than locking you into a service that won't fix the actual problem.
What a Basic Exterior Detail Includes
A proper basic exterior detail involves more than a soapy sponge and a rinse. At minimum, you should expect:
This is the foundation. Anything called "exterior detailing" that skips the hand wash and goes straight to a spray-down isn't detailing.
What a Basic Interior Detail Includes
The interior side of a basic detail should always include:
Notice what's not on this list: hot-water extraction of carpets, seat shampooing, leather conditioning, and stain treatment. Those are separate services. If your seats are stained or your carpets smell, you need a step above basic — and a good detailer will recommend exactly which add-ons solve your problem.
What Separates Detailing from a Car Wash
A car wash cleans the surface. A detail addresses the surface, the substrate underneath, and the long-term protection of both.
Three things distinguish real detailing:
Add-Ons That Make Sense for Oahu Drivers
Most Oahu drivers benefit from adding at least one of these to a basic detail:
These aren't upsells — they're the services that address the specific damage Hawaii's environment causes.
When Basic Isn't Enough
Be honest about your car's condition. If you can't remember the last detail, if there are stains you can see, if the carpet feels sandy, or if the headlights look cloudy, basic won't get you where you want to be. A real detailer will recommend the right tier for your actual vehicle — not just upsell whatever earns more.
